Last week I visited one of the new Yayoi Kusama exhibitions at the Victoria Miro gallery in Islington. I loved her last show at Tate Modern back in 2012, so I was really looking forward to seeing her new stuff.
The new work for Sculptures, Paintings & Mirror Rooms is themed around “cosmic infinity and personal obsession”. It features new paintings from her ongoing series Infinity Nets, iconic pumpkins sculptures, and most importantly — immersive mirror rooms. Which are so much fun!
The highlight for me was All the Eternal Love I have for the Pumpkins (an infinity mirror room, full of bright yellow pumpkin sculptures). As soon as the door closes behind you, it’s a magical moment with just you and the pumpkins for company. Oddly soothing. If only they left you in there for longer!
The Yayoi Kusama exhibitions run until the 30th July. Sculptures, Paintings & Mirror Rooms at Victoria Miro, and a selection of paintings from My Eternal Soul at Victoria Miro Mayfair.
