On day two of our Extreme Iceland tour we visited Breiðamerkursandur beach. A beautiful place where huge chunks of ice float downstream from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, and wash back onto the black sand. Unlike our time at the black sand beach in Vik, the weather was perfect for exploring. The sea was calm and the sun was out, making it a peaceful place to spend the first part of the morning.
As we hopped off the bus and got closer to the shore, seeing the contrast of the ice and the sand was stunning. Some of the pieces were even bigger than my sofa. And to think that these pieces of ice have been part of the Vatnajökull ice cap for potentially hundreds of years. Slowly making their way downstream, eventually getting washed away into the ocean.
